9th Grade and JV make history
The Union County 9th grade and JV football teams made history Thursday night when they both finished Region play with 5-0 records. No play-offs. No shiny trophies but “trophies” none-the-less in the eyes of the players and coaches. Their records bodes well for the varsity team next year.
9th Grade, JV, and Varsity Win Region
For the first time this season, all three football teams beat their common weekly opponent and, for a bonus, the varsity grabbed the first Region Championship for Union County High School as well.
The 9th grade scored with 45.4 seconds left in the first quarter on a TD run by Amos Miller and an extra point by Brandon Shetley. The score was set up by one of several failed fake punts by Blue Ridge on their own 31-yard line and a good 17-yard run by Miller to the two-yard line.
The Jacket’s next score came on a drive which started on Union’s own 23-yard line. Miller again broke loose and headed downfield on a 73-yard run to pay dirt. Shetley bounced the extra point off the inside of the right upright making the score 14-0.
Soon after getting the ball in the 3rd quarter, the Jackets scored again on a 31-yard run by Miller and a 22-yard TD dash by Trayvond Davis. The extra point was good, UC 21-0.
Blue Ridge finally got on the scoreboard in the fourth quarter making the final score 21-8.
Quick Hitters: At the half, Coach Will Hickson told the team that their first half “…was the worst first half of football I have ever seen.”… After the game, he thanked them for what they had done during the year…Coach Lipsey encouraged them to “…stay together and you can go as far as you want to go.”…CJ Gardin had a key tackle for loss…Derrick Good and Michael Cunningham both had interceptions… Nate Williford and Gardin had a TFL…co-captains were Nate Williford, Jarred Fowler, Amos Miller and Adrian Brown… lacking a Gatorade bucket, the players “dunked” Coach Hickson with water bottles at the end of the game…the Jackets outscored their region opponents this season 145-75.
The JVs hammered a hapless Blue Ridge 46-6 in a game called with 7:29 left in the game due to a serious injury to a Blue Ridge player.
The Jackets got on the board with Victor Ruth making the first of his TDs with a 67-yard scamper with just seconds gone off the clock. Quarterback Keiston Smith ran the two-point play in for a score. 8-0 with 8:25 on the clock.
Blue Ridge answered back with a hook and ladder pass play but could not make the extra point. 8-6.
Starting on their own 34-yard line, the Jackets scored again with Kiandre Riley crossing into to pay dirt. Smith ran the two-point play and Union led, 16-6 with 2:02 left in the quarter.
Demarcus Stewart then picked-off a Blue Ridge pass running it back to their thirteen-yard line with Michael Stewart bulling across from the one-yard line. Smith ran in another two-point conversion, Union 24-7 at the end of the first quarter.
Stewart made his second interception of the game at the Union 37-yard line. Smith ran a quarterback keeper to the Blue Ridge 47-yard line and then ran the ball to the 27. After a pass to Victor Ruth, Kiandre Riley ran it in for his second score. Ross Norris converted the two-point play. Union 32-6.
Union’s next score was set up by a 53-yard run by Smith and two big pass plays from Smith to Ruth who scored his second TD. Smith made the two-point play. Union 40-6.
The Jackets got on the board for its final score when Smith and Ruth hooked up again for a big pass play to the one-yard line. Ross Norris made the short-yardage TD. The extra point play failed. Union led 46-6 with 37 seconds left in the quarter.
Quick hitters. Correction: It was Victor Ruth who made two big receptions last week, one for a TD, not Michael Williams as erroneously reported. Ruth also had a big game against Blue Ridge running as well as receiving…Keiston Smith had his normal outstanding performance running the offense, passing, and running the ball…JaShawn Thompson batted down a pass… Nyjujuan Jeter had a tackle for loss… Demarcus Stewart also recovered an on-side kick… co-captains were Robert Humphries and Victor Ruth…after the game, Coach Caleb Clark commented on how miserable it was to see someone hurt like the Blue Ridge player: “You got better every game which is what you are supposed to do. Congratulations on winning the Region Championship. Have a good off-season.”… the JVs outscored their region opponents 144 to 54.
