Union County vs. Blue Ridge
By: Brian Whitmore - Union County News
The Union County Yellow Jackets are Region III-3A champions after a 26-16 win over Blue Ridge on Friday.
Michael Mebane scored three touchdowns to lead the Jackets. The win combined with Riverside’s 29-26 victory over Greer, gave UCHS (5-5, 3-2) the region title and the Jackets will host Chapin this week in the opening round of the Class 3A playoffs.
UCHs opened the scoring with a 16-play, 72-yard drive, which ate up most of the first quarter clock. Mebane scored from 8 yards out.
Blue Ridge answered, as Caleb Rowe scored from 5 yards out. After a long punt return by Tiger Tyshawn Richardson, Christian Bright kicked a 23-yard field goal to give Blue Ridge (5-5, 2-3) the lead.
Nick Monroe connected with Mebane on a 59-yard touchdown pass. The two-point try failed and the Jackets led 13-9 at halftime.
Mebane broke free for a 56-yard touchdown run late in the third. An interception led to Blue Ridge’s Brian Ross scoring. Blue Ridge then recovered a fumble, but Alex Tucker’s interception ended the threat and Kendrick Byrd scored on a 3-yard run.
As a champion, UCHS has a No. 1 playoff seed and Chapin enters as a No. 4 seed.
Fairfield Central defeated Chapin 19-10 to win the Region IV-3A title. Chapin has been injury plagued, losing three straight games after a 7-0 start under new coach Schott Earley. A bright spot for Chapin was Zach Gause’s 5-yard interception return for a touchdown. Some Eagles to watch are: Victor Frick, Hunter Bickley, Jalen Pauling, Conner Lowder and Matthew Hood-Pittenger.
