Union County vs. Clinton
By: Brian Whitmore - Union County News
One kick may have saved Clinton’s season and it hurt Union
County’s chance at a region title.
Hayden Rogers kicked a 24-yard field goal with 7.5 seconds left to give Clinton
a 13-10 win over UCHS on Friday night at Union County Stadium.
Kenny Cook intercepted a tipped Yellow Jacket pass and returned it into UCHS
territory with 19.7 seconds left. Grant Templeton then found Montel Keit
for a 35-yard gain to set up the winning kick.
Templeton’s 20-yard touchdown pass to Cook in the third quarter tied the game.
Rogers opened the scoring with a 24-yard field goal, set up by a 70-yard Deon
Speaks run. UCHS’ Alex Tucker answered with a 42-yard field goal.
The Jackets marched 86 yards in 13 plays at the end of the first half. Nick
Monroe scored from 3 yards out with 30 seconds left. UCHS led 10-3 at halftime.
Templeton was 10-of-15 for 190 yards and an interception. Cook caught five
catches for 79 yards. UCHS kept the Red Devil running game in check, holding
them to just 30 yards in the second half.
Monroe was 8-of-19 for 98 yards and an interception. Michael Mebane rushed for
81 yards on 21 carries, and John Simmons Fallaw for 42 yards on two carries.
Desmond Floyd led receivers with three grabs for 53 yards, Mebane had two
catches for 23 yards and Dierris Beacham had two for 12.
The loss drops UCHS (4-5, 2-2) out of the region lead and into a four-way tie
for second. Clinton (6-3, 2-2) can clinch a playoff spot with a win over Chapman
next week. UCHS will travel to Blue Ridge (5-4, 2-2). The Jackets need to win to
keep region title hopes alive and for playoff positioning.
“We’ve got one more region game and we’ll see what happens,” said Jacket
coach David Lipsey.
Greer (5-4, 3-1) defeated Blue Ridge 35-28 in overtime. Geer can clinch the
region title with a win over Riverside.
Blue Ridge is dangerous. Caleb Rowe was 15-of-27 for 191 yards and two
touchdowns. Rowe rushed for 73 yards on 19 carries, while Tyshawn Richardson ran
for 66 yards on 16 carries. Bryan Ross caught eight passes for 77 yards and a
touchdown. Four other Tigers caught passes - Jonathan Alexander (touchdown),
Carson Morton, Richardson and Bryton Griffin.
