GAFFNEY — Big 16 Gaffney was just too much for Union County, winning 31-0 on Friday night.

Gaffney quarterback D’Edward Burris did most of the damage with his arm and his legs. He threw two touchdown passes to Chris Brown and racked up a ton of rushing yards.

The Indians started strong, going 65 yards on the opening drive, with big gains by Burris on the ground and a 30-yard catch by Rodney Rodgers, who then ran for a 4-yard score.

In the second quarter, Brown caught touchdown passes of 38 and 18 yards. Gaffney led 21-0 at halftime.

Josh Harris kicked a 36-yard field goal on Gaffney’s first drive of the second half. Harris hit all of his point-after attempts on the night.

In the fourth quarter, Joe Craig ran 15 yards for a touchdown.

Union County’s best chances to score came late in the game with two trips into the Red Zone. The first chance ended on an incomplete pass, the third time in the game that Gaffney held the Jackets on fourth down. The second scoring opportunity ended on a fumble.

The bright spot for UCHS was Michael Mebane, who played well in the second half and racked up yardage. He finished with 119 yards rushing on 25 attempts. Alex Tucker caught a 32 yard pass from quarterback Nick Monroe.

Otherwise, the Jacket offense was held in check and the defense just didn’t have an answer for Burris’ speed and athleticism.

UCHS finished with 197 yards offense, 152 yards on the ground. Gaffney (2-1) put up 360 yards offense, 194 yards on the ground.

There were a lot of flags on both teams. Each team had a turnover.

“We’ve got a lot of work to do,” said Jacket coach David Lipsey.

UCHS (0-3) hosts Laurens next Friday.
